Thursday Lyric: Nothing To Remember, by Neko Case

I've really enjoyed this collection of songs from The Hunger Games movie this month, and this song made it onto my spring playlist for a couple of reasons:

1) It's new music from Neko Case, who hasn't come out with anything officially since 2009's wonderful album Middle Cyclone, and I have missed her voice.

2) I loved the song, of course. Neko writes beautiful, gut-level lyrics follow a small, intense emotional journey. The lyrics are possibly a loose reference to Katniss Everdeen's particular fears and hopes and motivation, but they carry universality, too. In fact, several of Neko's other songs resonate with Katniss, even the song Middle Cyclone off of the album of the same name.

I spend my life becoming invisible
it's hard to maintain and it's hard to get by
and I don't recall fight or flight setting in
I have no introduction I just breathe it in like the air

And there is nothing to remember, there is nothing to remember

I owe you nothing; that's all I've got for you
you'll borrow nothing; that's what you expect of me

So you send me your love tied up in sailor's knots
And I fear underneath the weight of your thoughts
My footsteps now, they will echo too loudly

All I own, all I own
Are the strides I spend to the finish line
All I own, all I own
Are the strides I spend to the finish line
And I'll give you those

You told me something that scared me to death
Don't take me home, I can't face that yet
I'm ashamed that I'm very human
I'm ashamed that I don't have a heart you can break
I'm just action, and at other times re-action

All I own, all I own
Are the strides I spend to the finish line
All I own, all I own
Are the strides I spend to the finish line
I'll give you those

Just don't make me go home
Give me something to remember
Give me something to remember
Give me something to remember
